River-to-River hike is in Pope CountyThe River-to-River Trail Society will hold its third guided hike of the 2022 fall hiking season on Saturday, Oct. 15. Sam Morales will lead a hike in the Promised Land area of Pope County. This will be a hike of moderate difficulty, five miles in length, four hours of hiking time; this hike has creek crossings. Hikers will need to shuttle for this hike; it will be a loop hike once shuttled. Hikers should meet at the Benham Ridge Trailhead parking area (GPS 37.509486, -88.473628) at 10 a.m. The hike is free and open to the public. Hiking sticks and boots or sturdy shoes are strongly recommended. Hikers should bring their own water and a snack. No dogs, please. Dinner, auction aids Child Evangelism FellowshipChild Evangelism Fellowship will hold its sixth annual dinner and auction from 6-8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, at the John A. Logan College Conference Center in Carterville. CEF Southern Illinois Chapter serves 19 counties. Proceeds will benefit CEF Good News Clubs, a Bible-centered after-school club for 5- to 12-year-olds. The evening will include dinner by Crystal’s, silent auction, door prizes and information about the adopt-a-school opportunity for local churches. Basketball youth league hosting sign-upsThe Harry Statham Youth Basketball League will have three sign-up opportunities for pre-K to fourth-grade players. Project Hope holding vaccine clinicProject Hope Humane Society, 1698 W. 10th St., Metropolis, will host a vaccine clinic from noon until 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15. Vaccines for rabies and dog and cat booster shots will be available, as well as microchipping, baths and toenail trims, on a first come, first serve basis; watch Project Hope’s Facebook Page for costs. Johnson County historical society meets Oct. 16The Johnson County Genealogical and Historical Society will meet at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 16, in the meeting room of the Vienna Public Library, located on the south side of the historic Vienna public square. Max Hutchison will speak on the natural and scenic locations of Johnson County, of which he has been collecting information on for many years. MCDAC meets Oct. 19Massac County Drug Awareness Coalition meets the third Wednesday of every month at 8 a.m. in person in the Metropolis City Hall council chambers and also via Zoom. Council hosting resource health fairThe Alexander Pulaski Action Council will host the Alexander-Pulaski Resource Health Fair for parents of teens on Tuesday, Oct. 25, from 4-7 p.m. at Century School, 4819 Shawnee College Rd., Ullin. Kiwanis of Metropolis next Peanut Day is Oct. 29Kiwanis of Metropolis will hold its 2022 Peanut Day fundraising project on Saturday, Oct. 29, from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. Kiwanians and Massac County High School Key Club members will set up roadblocks at two intersections in Metropolis to solicit donations and distribute peanuts. Monies help fund academic scholarships for Massac County students and also support many other local children’s projects.

Ghostly wake coming to Curtis houseA ghostly wake hosted by Mrs. Elijah P. Curtis will take place Saturday, Oct. 29, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Visitors are invited to meet her spirit guests, but should enter at their own risk and watch their steps. Who knows what will be seen as those plucky visitors tour each eerie room? The wake is being held at the Curtis family home, 405 Market St., Metropolis. The event will be suitable for all ages, and visitors may come in costume if they choose. A special super guest is expected to be there, along with the spirit guests. Tickets are a $7 donation to the Massac County Historical Society and are available at the door.

Nominees sought for Antique Angel Tree projectNominees are being sought for the annual Antique Angel Tree Project of New Beginnings at Massac Memorial Hospital. Nominations are due Thursday, Nov. 4. Nominees must be over 65 and meet one or more criteria: are on a limited income; do not have family close for the holidays; have difficulty with mood/anxiety in winter months and around holidays; and/or live alone in Massac County, not a nursing home or assisted living. Forms are available through New Beginnings and must include the name, address, phone number, gender and age of the nominee, along with their clothing sizes, preferred snacks and six desired gifts. MCDAC hosting trivia nightThe Massac County Drug Awareness Coalition will host trivia night and raffle on Friday, Nov. 12, at the Metropolis Elks Lodge, 104 W. Fourth St., Metropolis. Doors will open at 6:15 p.m. with trivia from 7-9:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 per person or $120 for a team of six. Teams are a maximum of six people.
